In August
of 2003, all FSU centers caring for children were integrated into one
entity, FSU Child Development Programs. Before consolidation, the four
centers operated independently, each with different histories and structures.
The four centers are Alumni Village Child Development Center, Educational
Research Center for Child Development, Infant and Toddler Child Development
Center and Starlight Child Development Center. All were originally established
to assist student parents in the care and education of their children
so that they could attend classes as well as to provide “hands on”
experience and training for various academic departments on the FSU campus.
FSU Child Development Programs are governed by Florida State University
and ultimately the Board of Trustees. It is administered by University
Housing.
Two of the centers are located
on Main Campus and two in Southwest campus (near the FAMU/FSU Engineering
School). The four centers have the capacity to care for 180 children from
6 weeks to 11 years of age; the majority of spaces are for preschoolers
(children ages 3 to 5) and school age children (ages 5 to 11). All centers
voluntarily follow the standards set forth by the National Association
for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with regard to the curriculum
content, group size, staff/child ration and teacher qualification. All
centers are licensed by the State of Florida through the Department of
Children and Families. Annual inspections of the centers are conducted
by the Department of Children and Families to ensure they meet all state
standards, policies and procedures. The Alumni Village Child Development
Center and Educational Research Center for Child Development Center are
fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC). The Infant and Toddler Child Development Center and
Starlight Child Development Center are in the process of self-study, which
is the first step in the accreditation process.
